Commander Ulthok is the bread and butter of any monster hero based deck. He allows you to do things that are not correct to do. In parallel to another famous CCG, this card would cost 4 and not even come with a creature attached.

The high price tag of this card I highly justified. It just wins games. Your deck have a win condition? Well, it’s gone now! Your deck has an out to what I have in play? Not anymore. Yep, that good.

Perhaps the only downside to the card is that it comes down a turn to late to stop the 200$+ card: Edwin Van Cleef. But on the plus side: it comes down a turn earlier than Mazu’Kon. Needless to say, with Harmonize it gets much better.

At 5 power he also turns into a real beatstick and can actually just swing for the win. Control is underplayed at the moment because there is very little crowd control cards available, Perhaps this will change with the advent of Tomb of the Forgotten being released soon. As it stands, mage Monster decks are the ones that are most likely to use this in conjunction with Monstrous Frostbolt Volley to decimate opposing forces.

On the Harmonize side of things, you have Keeper Sharus which seems like an auto-include if you are trying to power out a quick Ulthok. His price has decreased slightly so as to make this setup more affordable. I don’t see the price of Ulthok decreasing with the new set. Quite the contrary, actually. So load up on them if you can.

Another thing that is awesome about the card is the art. Raymond Swanland who usually draws Magic: the Gathering cards did a superb job with this card. The perspective we get of the main character indicates he is of a huge stature and it seems to have deadly tentacles. We also get the little debris pieces that Swanland is famous for.

He is probably the reason people still buy boosters of Throne of the Tides. I am almost sure these boosters are not being printed anymore, so if you can find an Epic Collection of Throne of the Tide… nab it! Keep an eye out for more product descriptions such as this one as they give you a much needed insight as to a card’s uses, reason for its popularity and sometimes just some humorous comments about it.
